Dark Days

"...Alta May seems to fucking nail the feeling, energy and rock right on the bull’s-eye."

Alta May has been banging around the Seattle rock scene since 2001. On August 12, their second album, Dark Days, will be released on Glazed Records. The band plays guitar-heavy rock, but they break out of the traditional mode with the use of distorted vocals, tempo changes and feedback. Their sound is fairly reminiscent of what was going on locally in the early 90s. These guys probably grew up getting stoned to bands like Skin Yard, Nirvana and Mudhoney, forever tainting the future music they’d play.

Dark Days really brings me back to the days of the "Four Bands for Four Bucks" shows at the UW Hub, when Nirvana, the Fluid, Tad, the Gits and many others were nearly at their peak. So many bands have tried to ape early grunge and failed miserably. Or, worse yet, jump on its coattails with far less aggressive and fun music (like Pearl Jam), but Alta May seems to fucking nail the feeling, energy and rock right on the bull’s-eye. It’s no surprise the album was produced by grunge guru Jack Endino. Dark Days may be a bit nostalgic, but nonetheless, it’s more worth a bong hit and rockin’ out to than the majority of what passes for rock today.
