![]() "...a sound that's as heavy as a tool belt full of chainsaws.." |
The Stranger Up & Coming August 2003 Forming a sound that's as heavy as a tool belt full of chainsaws but that has enough melody to incorporate handfuls of hooks is a difficult task. Seattle's Alta May have been toiling away at this delicate balance for years, and their new release, Dark Days, is a fine example of how they've served their ideal placement between the two. Opener "Dark Days on Black Hill" rattles your chest like Queens of the Stone Age's 1998 debut--and even without Jack Endino behind the production, Dark Days would most likely still sound like an early entry from the Sub Pop catalog, especially with certain tracks' close proximity to Nirvana riffs. That sound can be both a blessing and a curse for Alta May, catching them in a sonic time machine with an album's worth of mostly catchy material (some of which has been getting much KEXP airplay) that hopefully won't prevent them from getting the props they're due for this new release. -Jennifer Maerz <<<< BACK TO PRESS PAGE |
