LA Weekly Los Angeles, California Live Preview January 31, 2003 Alta May, The Apes, Bluebird, GoGoGo Airheart at the Smell. Extend your finger skyward and rotate it as Alta May shake their booties down at the proverbial dock. Their We As in Us (Glazed) polishes the rust off metal (heavy) while forming a beast with three backs and forging a groove that eternally digs toward the earth's core. Los Angeles' Bluebird play new songs from their recent Black Presence, coiling ambience and improv behind bass rhythms and treble-troubled guitar/keyboards. From D.C., the Apes "command the rock subculture" with varying levels of deft brutality and ecstasy via bass, Hammond organ, drums and vocals. San Diego's GoGoGo Airheart emblazon the de facto battle cry "GGGAH" across their bass-drum head; front man Michael Vermillion squeals over electronic peals and a throbbing gristle of sonic implosion, investigating disco-fied noise interwoven with crepuscular experimental electronica (as on the current ExitheUXA), to better serve a heavily goose-fleshed evening of fulfillment. - David Cotner <<<< BACK TO PRESS PAGE |
