Dark Days

"The eight tracks here are thick with bass and fuzz, drums that rollick and rumble and lyrics that never fall into cliché."

Alta May "Dark Days"
The members of Alta May lived throught the glory days of SubPop Records in the early '90s and witnessed firsthand the intense power and passion of the grunge-punk bands that emerged from teh rainy northwestern city of Seattle. While the whole grunge-punk sound has been bastardized and homogenized by third generation Pearl Jam wannabes, the members of Alta May have set forth on a mission to make people remember just how good Nirvana, Mudhoney and Sonic Youth were in their prime. On the band's second album Dark Days, Alta May picks up right where it loeft off on 2001's We As In Us, a phenomenally heavy, dirty and dank rock and roll album that left me floored and begging for more. Drummer Garrett Shavlik (ex-The Fluid) has worked with Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme in the past and Homme's stoner-rock style has definitely rubbed off on Shavlik and his band mates Erik Roper (guitarist/vocalist) and Marcus Pina (bassist/vocalist). Dark Days' kickoff track, "Dark Days on Black Hill," should be and could be QOTSA's next single. "The Beautiful Sea," with its haunting opening chord progression, is my favorite song on the album - a familiar sounding blast of chugging rock that brings to mind both the work of early Nirvana (Bleach-era) and QOTSA (Roper's guitar playing often could b e mistaken for Homme's). On it's past two albums, Local H has tried to create the same souind that Alta May comes close to perfecting on Dark Days and there are a few instances where the two bands sound quite a bit alike (example: "Stand in Line" and "Dark Days on Black Hill"). Of course, having legendary producer Jack Endino twist the knobs is sure to bring out the the grungiest sounds possible and Endino doesn't fail on this project. One listen to this album should make kids completely forget about the weak post-grunge imitators like Creed, 3 Doors Down, and Staind. Get this one as soon as possible and be prepared to be buried in its glorious heaviness. [Glazed Records - www.glazed.com] - Chip Midnight
