Dark Days (Glazed, 2003)

Alta May’s electrifying 2001 debut "We As In Us" catapulted the Seattle trio onto the international rock scene, drawing worthy comparisons to Queens of the Stone Age and Bleach-era Nirvana. Blending shear sonic rock power with melodic songcraft and masterful musicianship, Alta May soon brought it to the stage, captivating audiences with their engaging high-energy live show. Every show was played like it would be their last, and West Coast forays and a European tour followed, capping a near-perfect 18 months of rock mayhem with an appearance at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin.

Now, with their sophomore effort, "Dark Days", Alta May raises the bar for themselves, both musically, stylistically, and sonically, resulting in a collection of songs that are a surprising, yet logical progression from their well-received debut. Brought in to help realize the bands ambitious vision is legendary SubPop producer Jack Endino, who’s work with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Hot Hot Heat, are well documented in rock lore. Alta May also expand their sound by adding vintage keys and horns, and by bringing in cult improvisational saxophone player Wally Shoup, whose many collaborations include a touring trio that features Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Finally, Jon Ervie, producer of "We As In Us", puts it all together with quiet diligence at Seattle’s Jupiter Studios (The Briefs, The Presidents of the USA, Mudhoney). Mastering is completed with love by Martin Feveyear.

Recent shows with Verbena, Mudhoney, Bluebird, Hot Hot Heat and Visqueen see Alta May debuting material from "Dark Days" in their element, which is live. From the evidence viewed thus far, the band is bringing it once again, with more power and energy than before. Alta May is one of those rare bands that creates records that capture their explosive live experience, and play live shows that deliver moments of musical majesty. Go get their records, one and two, and go see them live. You won’t regret it.

"Dark Days" was recorded and produced by Jack Endino, Jon Ervie, and Alta May at Soundhouse Studios and Jupiter Studios, Seattle. Mixed at Jupiter by Jon Ervie and Alta May. Mastered by Martin Feveyear at Jupiter. Tracklisting is Dark Days On Black Hill, The Music of Language, The Beautiful Sea, Soften Your Glare, Boys Club, Sweet Rachel, Stand In Line, All Lie Down.
